Earth Day 2017: GRFA Calls for Renewed Global Commitment to Climate Action

(TORONTO) Today, Bliss Baker, the President of the Global Renewable Fuels Alliance (GRFA), paid tribute to the 57th annual Earth Day and called for a renewed global commitment to action on CO2 emissions in the year ahead. More than a billion people around the world are expected to mark the occasion by showing their support for environmental protection. Each year festivals, parades and rallies are held in 192 countries to mark the occasion.

“As the global community pauses today to voice support for protecting the global environment, it is important to reflect on the historic progress made in 2016 and the need to convert commitments into meaningful actions” Baker said. “196 countries have signed on to the world’s first binding agreement on climate action, what needs to happen next is the implementation of policies across the globe aimed at reducing national CO2 emissions.”

It is estimated that the global transport sector represents close to 45% of direct CO2 emissions while having the lowest renewable energy share among all sectors, making it a priority sector for policy action to reduce emissions. With a carbon footprint 40-90% lower than fossil fuels, biofuels are the ideal solution to cost-effectively reduce transport emissions while continuing to grow the global economy.

“The GRFA is excited to work with governments and international NGO’s to continue to build on the exciting progress made in the last two years and to develop workable solutions to keep global temperature rise this century within the targets laid out in the Paris agreement.” Baker concluded.

The Global Renewable Fuels Alliance is a non-profit organization dedicated to promoting biofuel friendly policies internationally. Alliance members represent over 90% of global biofuels productions. Through the development of new technologies and best practices, Alliance members are committed to producing renewable fuels with the smallest possible footprint.
